Wednesday 6th March 2024

This was the final match of the season and resulted in a draw.

The Pit Farm team have won 2 matches, drawn 2 matches and lost 1.

We now stand 2nd in league division 6 and could get promoted to division 5 with only Purley to play Ashtead to alter that position.

It was a flawless performance by 1st pair, Tim Martin and Patrick Sullivan who won all four of their sets, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-4 with some determined and skilled finishing.

2nd pair Colin Taylor and Captain, Jim Langan, struggled to find form, with a drawn scoreline and 2 disastrous championship tie breaks – scores were 3-6, 6-4 lost TB and 5-7, 7-5 lost TB.

It didn’t help that the Captain was substituted in at a late stage and had just returned from a two week skiing holiday in Canada. No practise there. Colin Taylor, on the other hand played a leading role in securing at least the draw and often found himself carrying the result, well done Colin.

Two reflections on improving

matters for next season are;

  1. We need an enlarged squad of O55 players on which to draw, if you are interested in playing next season please contact me, Jim Langan on Langanjames62@gmail.com
  2. We should now install a regular training programme towards achieving a higher standard and better familiarity of players styles, tactics and strengths. Also and finally,
  3. I would like to thank all the players who took part in the Winter league with great spirit and a great sense of good sportsmanship, I think the club’s reputation has been enhanced with the camaraderie that was established with our various opponents with no contentious or disputed outcomes. Let’s do it all again next season, hopefully in division 5.
